DEAR WATCHMAN...WATCH AND PRAY!!!
Heeeeyyyy y’all!! And welcome back. I pray that all has been well with you. This month’s blog post topic is for a very unique and specific group of individuals…in other words, you will know right a way if this word is for you. We will be diving deeper in to the function, role and mandate of a WATCHMAN. I have had this specific topic stirring for quite some time but now was the time to release it. I am excited to be posting about this and I pray that it brings clarity and insight, as well as a prophetic push and activation for those who may have fallen short and whom have just grown weary. This mandate/assignment/role is not for the weak, so I get it…oh I get it 100%. But it is my prayer that after you have read this, that you are better equipped and empowered to do what God has called, chosen and commissioned you to do. Press in….
Who/What is a Watchman?
A watchman is someone who is spiritually alert, positioned, and assigned to watch, warn, and intercede. In biblical times, watchmen stood on city walls or towers, scanning the horizon for danger or any approaching movement. Spiritually, God raises up watchmen to see in the spirit, hear His voice, and sound the alarm when necessary. Please note, a watch”man” is not just designated for men. A woman of God can also be a watchman.
The Watchman has an assignment that includes:
1. To Watch and Discern
“I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me…”
— Habakkuk 2:1 (NIV)
The first role of a watchman is to remain alert—to discern what’s happening spiritually, whether it’s in a family, city, nation, or even the church. They are sensitive to shifts in the atmosphere and tuned into the voice of God.
This means and includes:
• watching in prayer
• discerning the times and seasons
• recognizing spiritual threats before they manifest
• guarding the gates of what enters and exits a region, household, or ministry
2. To Warn
“Son of man, I have made you a watchman… so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.”
— Ezekiel 3:17
One of the most sobering responsibilities of a watchman is to warn when danger is approaching—whether it’s deception, judgment, or spiritual compromise. This is never easy and it often comes with some hesitation, if I am being honest. But when God says say it, guess what…IT MUST BE SAID, regardless of how you “feel” about it. Why? Because God holds the watchman accountable for speaking what they see and hear. If they stay silent, the consequences fall on their hands. So you see, those consequences hit different when you are not obedient to the instruction of Yah.
This is important to note: The warning is not always dramatic—it can be a gentle nudge, a dream, a prophetic word, or a strong urge in prayer.
3. To Intercede
Watchmen are also intercessors. They don’t just see the problem; they stand in the gap and cry out for God’s intervention.
Think of Isaiah 62:6-7:
“I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night… give yourselves no rest, and give Him no rest till He establishes Jerusalem…”
Their prayers push heaven’s agenda into the earth, acting as spiritual midwives to birth what God is doing.
4. To Cover and Protect
Watchmen help cover leaders, cities, ministries, and families in prayer. Look at it like this, they spiritually patrol the territory assigned to them and block enemy infiltration. They are guardians of boundaries—ensuring nothing unauthorized gains access.
This includes:
• praying protection over people and places
• discerning spiritual warfare
• strategically resisting demonic activity
5. To Announce and Herald
In addition to the warning of danger, watchmen also announce what God is doing. They herald (as the official messenger) the move of God, speak forth His Word, and help prepare others to respond.
Like John the Baptist, they prepare the way of the Lord and often carry a forerunner anointing—sensing what’s coming before it manifests. Have you ever had this happen, how many of you can relate? You just knew in your spirit something was coming, like you just knew that you knew that you knew… I can definitely relate.
Now, let’s shift and discuss the weight of the assignment (those that know, just know…) and the mandate of the Watchman.
Because the truth is, being a watchman is not all glitz and glamour —it’s heavy, lonely at times, and often misunderstood. But it is a high calling, deeply needed in this hour. Watchmen must be:
• submitted to God
• rooted in the Word
• disciplined in prayer
• courageous in obedience
• pure in motive
The Watchman’s Mandate: Seeing, Warning, and Warring in the Spirit!!! Somebody needs to read that again because this is not the time to overcomplicate what God has called you too. The mandate of the Watchman: See, Warn, and War in the Spirit.
I strongly believe that in this hour, God is reawakening the watchmen—those who see what others overlook, hear what others ignore, and cry out when others fall silent. Watchmen aren’t always in pulpits or platforms. Many are hidden, quiet, and seemingly ordinary but often times peculiar. But in the spirit??? Catch it, ok… They are stationed. They are armed. They are alert. Not to be played with..
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and felt the urgency to pray at 3 a.m., had dreams that later came to pass, or carried burdens that had no natural explanation…then you might be called as a watchman. Does this resonate? I hope that I am helping somebody.
Remember, God told Ezekiel: “I have made you a watchman… so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me” (Ezekiel 3:17). This wasn’t a casual assignment—it was a life-and-death responsibility.
1. Watchmen Are Set to SEE
Watchmen are visionaries in the spirit. They don’t just look—they see. They discern. They perceive. They are sensitive to:
• shifts in spiritual atmospheres
• movements of the enemy
• the timing and activity of God
Like Habakkuk, a watchman says: “I will stand at my watch… I will look to see what He will say to me” (Habakkuk 2:1). You don’t just hear words—you see them unfold. God may speak through dreams, impressions, burdens, or supernatural awareness.
2. Watchmen Are Called to WARN
This is one of the heaviest assignments: to warn others when spiritual danger is near. It’s not about fear—it’s about preparation. It’s not about control—it’s about obedience. Lissstteeennnn, did you catch it? Because somebody needs to be set free. You worry about how others will perceive you when you release what God has called you to warn/say. You struggle with warning God’s people because you don’t want to always be perceived as “the one who comes with bad news,” or you are the one who does not tell the people what they want to hear but you tell them what they NEED to hear. Be set free today. You have an assignment to fulfill and as heavy as the assignment might be, if you do not release the warning, the consequences will be on you. That is not to invoke fear but it’s time to release the need for outside validation when it comes to your mandate and get moving in the things of God. Amen.
Remember, God told Ezekiel that if the watchman saw the sword coming and didn’t warn the people, the blood would be on their hands (Ezekiel 33:6). That’s not to scare you—it’s to remind you how important your voice is in this generation.
Sometimes your warning will be a word. Other times, it’ll be a prayer, a dream, or a prophetic action.
3. Watchmen Are Called to WAR
Watchmen are intercessors and warriors. They don’t just observe—they engage. They stand between heaven and earth, lifting up cries of mercy, breakthrough, and justice.
“I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent…” (Isaiah 62:6). Real watchmen won’t be silenced. They war in the spirit for families, cities, regions, and nations.
I don’t know who needs to hear this but, you may feel unseen in the natural—but in the spirit realm, you are known. Hell recognizes the voice of a praying watchman.
4. Watchmen Cover, Guard, and Protect
Watchmen are spiritual gatekeepers. They cover pastors, leaders, ministries, and even territories. They don’t allow anything unclean or unauthorized to slip through the cracks.
They pray around boundaries. They identify breaches. And they cry out until the wall is fortified again.
5. Watchmen Announce What God Is Doing
Watchmen don’t just announce danger—they also herald (as the official messengers) the move of God. They carry insight into what’s coming and prepare others to respond. Like John the Baptist, they may be misunderstood, but they carry a forerunner anointing.
They announce revival, transition, warning, alignment, or instruction—whatever heaven is speaking!!
This might be a lot to unpack but it is definitely needed for a time such as this. For those of you who know this applies to you, stay on Heaven’s course concerning your calling.
Prayer: Father, I thank You for calling me to stand on the wall. I yield myself as Your vessel—alert, obedient, and positioned. Open my spiritual eyes to see what You are revealing. Unclog my ears to hear the whispers of heaven. Give me courage to speak what You say, even when it’s unpopular. Clothe me in intercession, fire, and discernment. Let me not grow weary in my watch. Teach my hands to war, my fingers to fight and my heart to stay tender before You. I decree and declare: I will not be silent. I will not be moved. I will not miss my post. I repent for the times I have fallen short and have gotten off of my post and I ask for forgiveness. Give me the strength, endurance and perseverance to push forward in my calling/mandate/function. Open my eyes to see any distractions that would hinder me from being obedient to the call. Thank you for trusting me as a vessel. Thank you for endowing me with the courage that I need. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
If you sense this calling, here are 5 ways to stir and strengthen it:
1. Establish a Watch Time: Set a consistent time to pray, whether early morning, late night, or during the day. Watchmen stay in rhythm with the Spirit (for more insight into this, check out my blog post: Watch and Pray- The 8 Prayer Watches)
2. Record What You See: Start a watchman journal. Write/document your dreams, impressions, burdens, visions—God will often speak through patterns.
3. Ask God for Your Assignment: What are you assigned to watch over—your church, your family, your city, a generation? It’s important that you are aligned with God’s specific assignment for you.
4. Sharpen Your Discernment: Fast, pray, and stay in the Word. Discernment grows in consecration.
5. Find Community: Connect with others who carry the same calling. Watchmen often work in teams (see Nehemiah 4:9).
Your voice is needed. Your prayers are powerful. Your watch is sacred.
Heaven is still posting watchmen on the wall—and your name is being called. Will you answer?
